Developing as a Professional

13: Professional growth

Richard Henry Dann once said, "He who dares to teach must never cease to learn." To stop the learning process after receiving a degree ultimately produces stagnant results. I have been fortunate to have participated in several professional growth seminars both through the university, and outside the university curriculum. CSUSM offers professional growth seminars each semester that provide teacher candidates with a wealth of information that expands upon the curriculum of the university. I have personally attended about ten of these seminars, receiving professional growth certificates during the Spring 2002 and Spring 2003 semesters. I have found the information to be beneficial for my future as a teacher. I also attended the Oral History Association seminar in October 2002, and the Joint Meetings of the AMS (American Mathematical Society) and the MAA (Mathematical Association of America) in January 2002. Both provided numerous seminars and many products that are beneficial for classroom use. Within the next five years, I plan to continue my education by attending many more professional growth seminars offered through my school district and outside professional agencies. Furthermore, I plan to begin the process of receiving my Master’s Degree in Education. I realize that doing so will be an overwhelming task while also teaching. However, I feel that furthering my knowledge and understanding of education is essential for me to become the best teacher I can be. In this regard, I will never stop learning.
