South Dakota was bought in 1803 from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase.   Its settler’s [sic] had to be hardy to withstand the fierce climate they encountered.   Blistering heat could occur in the summertime.   Blizzards often proved deadly in winter.   Spring flooding could destroy homes and freshly planted crops.   Tornadoes always loomed as a summer threat.   Rainfall was uncertain, and drought could spoil a harvest.
