Weekday mornings are pretty busy in the Komplexify household, as the Ladybug, the Butterfly, and I scramble to get dressed, fed, and cleaned in time for school. (The Queen B leaves blissfully (for her, at least) early for work, and doesn’t have to deal with it.) We had just wrapped up breakfast, and as I loaded the dishes into the dishwater, I told the girls to go brush their teeth. The Ladybug raced to the bathroom and set up her toothbrush… but did so standing on the step-stool that the Butterfly needs in order to reach the sink. The Butterfly got to the bathroom a moment later and saw her sister standing on her stool.
Butterfly: That’s my stool. Move it, dammit!
[ I'd heard it too, and dropped the dishes in the sink and descended on the bathroom in furious indignation. ]
Me: What did you say?
Butterfly: The Ladybug is on my stool and I told her to move, dammit.
Me: That was a rude thing to say to your sister.
Butterfly: Sorry, Sissy.
Me: That’s also a naughty word you said. Little girls are not allowed to say dammit.
Butterfly: [ Quietly ] Oh.
Me: Do you understand?
Butterfly: Little girls can’t say that word.
Butterfly: …Only mommies and daddies can.
Me: Oh… dammit.
