Let’s review the past seven-and-a-half years of President George W. Bush.
On the negative side of the list:
- Failed to actually be legitimately elected president in 2000
- Destroyed the reputation and credibility of the United States within the international community
- Failed to dispatch the mastermind of the 9/11 attack
- Launched a universally unpopular and costly war under false pretenses and little planning
- Eliminated health and education benefits to veterans of said war
- Legitimized the use of torture
- Suspended basic human rights such as habeas corpus and the right to a fair trial
- Ran the American economy into the ground with impending recession, and credit and mortgage crises
- Record national debt, trade and budget deficits
- Fundamentally damaged American education under the unfunded NCLB mandate
- Openly hostile to science; enforces a crude, fundamentalist evangelical worldview
- Populated key government watchdog agencies (EPA, FAA, SEC) with executives from the very corporations they were established to monitor
- Bungled disaster relief with Hurricane Katrina
On the plus side:
- He sent me a check that covered the construction of a new deck in my backyard
So I guess, all in all, it was an okay presidency.
Assuming he doesn’t do anything else illegal, immoral, or just plain asinine in the next six months, that is.
